Bulk dust control at the Port of Ravenna

In July 2025, we installed two 16.5-metre spray lines at Ravenna's Terminal Nord, a strategic hub handling over 3 million tonnes of bulk cargo per year. Hence the problem to be solved: bulk dust control. The new lines, placed on the entrance and exit canopies of the vehicles, are powered by high-pressure pumps and activated by radio control, directly from the operator driving the wheel loader. The result? Significant dust abatement, healthier working environments and more orderly and efficient logistics operations.

Targeted intervention for bulk dust control at Ravenna's Terminal Nord

In July 2025 we had the opportunity to carry out a major intervention at North Terminal, one of the most strategic realities of the Port of Ravenna. This infrastructure is a point of reference for the logistics and distribution of raw materials destined for the Emilia Romagna ceramic district, with a handling capacity exceeding the 3 million tonnes of bulk per year. Its geographical location, combined with the efficiency of its facilities, makes Terminal Nord a key partner for the entire industry.

Port operations take place at an intense pace: goods are disembarked from ships via harbour cranes with an average output of around 200 tonnes per hour per teamand then transferred to the storage yards, where the first crushing and mixing operations are carried out. It was at this stage that a crucial problem arose: the dust dispersion during material handling under a canopy.

Terminal Nord entrusted us with finding a concrete and effective solution, and we at Conrad Cannons we designed and installed two spray lines of 16.5 metres each. The first was placed on the vehicle entrance canopy, the second on the exit canopy. These two lines 100 metres apart, a distance equal to the length of the canopy, are fed by two high-pressure pump modulescapable of generating a very fine mist capable of breaking down suspended dust particles while limiting water consumption.

A further added value of our work was the inclusion of the remote controlwhich allows the wheel loader operator to switch the lines on and off independently, without interrupting the operating cycle. In this way, dust control becomes immediate and flexible, adapting to the needs of the moment.

The results were tangible right from the start: thanks to our intervention, Terminal Nord was able to record a significant improvement in dust reductionwith clear benefits both for the operators, who work in a healthier environment, and for the organisation of logistical activities, which are now smoother and more orderly.

We are proud that our work contributes not only to improving operational efficiency, but also to strengthening Terminal Nord's image as a sustainability and environmentally responsible company. In a port environment characterised by high volumes and fast pace, reliable and easy-to-manage solutions like ours represent a real competitive advantage.

With this intervention, we have once again confirmed how the technology and experience of Conrad Cannons can make a difference in sustainable dust management in major industrial and port hubs.
