Excessive dust in the tunnel – Conrad solves – the history of the Lausanne tunnel

A Tunnel at 70m Depth

Yes, that’s right, a railway tunnel to speed trains 70 meters underground, not far from Italy, in Lausanne, Switzerland.

Excavation Powder and Ground Milling

Cannoni-Conrad has been called to eliminate the presence of excessive dust produced by the Liebherr 944 Excavator during its activities (see header image).  On the excavator’s arm, the cutter moves and grinds the soil, which will be picked up and transported out. This process made the environment highly unhealthy and dangerous, also because the powerful suction systems were unable to vacuum big volumes of dust and the operator in the excavator’s cabin often had big problems of visibility during the cutting phase.

A New set-up  for a new challenge

For this work, we have chosen a versatile machine: The CONRAD C42. This model comes with a range of over 40 m and a high-pressure pump, being able to dose the quantity of water sparingly and select the type of fine atomization, based on the dust-type raised by the cutter.

Versatility was certainly the keystone of this company. In fact, in addition to much appreciated articulated arm, we also added a 3-wheel pneumatic trolley with stabilizers. This combination has offered great benefits to operators. The cannon was directed precisely and punctually to the origin of the powder thank to the articulated arm. The trolley with pneumatic wheels allowed easy towing throughout the tunnel and the stabilizers gave the possibility to place the machine close to cuts and holes in the ground, allowing the cannon to reach everywhere.
